Renowned Calligraphy Artist to Teach Class for Guilford Art Center
Calligraphy Intensive to be Offered in Conjunction with International Exhibition

One of the world's most esteemed calligraphy artists will be the featured instructor at a Calligraphy Intensive being offered by the Guilford Art Center this summer. Gottfried Pott, of Wiesbaden, Germany, will teach at the Intensive, which is being held in conjunction with the exhibition Responding to Our World: Words, Images, Gestures at the Guilford Art Center, on view June 29-August 12. The intensive will take place at the Mercy Center in Madison, July 29-August 3.

Responding to Our World is an international, juried exhibition of works by 40 artists from around the globe who use the traditional art of calligraphy to present various interpretations of the current political and cultural climate. The Calligraphy Intensive will offer students the chance to pursue their own explorations of this craft.

Gottfried Pott studied graphic design, with an emphasis on lettering art, at the Werkkunstschule in Wiesbaden with Friedrich Poppl. At the same time, he studied painting with Vincent Weber and music with Peter Kempin. From 1988 to 2003 Pott was Professor of Calligraphy and Lettering Design at the University of Applied Science and Art at Hildesheim, Germany. Pott has designed four typefaces; his personal work is exhibited widely, and frequently reflects his love of music and the abstract. He has written numerous articles and three books about calligraphy. He is a fine teacher, known throughout the United States, Asia and Europe for encouraging his students to pursue the love of letters.

Pott's class for the Intensive will be Creative Calligraphy, for intermediate/advanced students. The class will look back to calligraphic writing of the first centuries as a way to rediscover them and incorporate them into their own contemporary forms.
