Artists of all ages have a variety of mediums
to choose from in the creation of their art.
This mixed media medley offers a series of projects
in a variety of mediums, old and new. Wooden
spinning tops were one of my favorite toys as
a child, as well as creating unique works of
art by using crayons in an unusual way. Children
will create patterned pieces through crayon
rubbings and salt water washes, marble paintings,
pressed flower cards for that special occasion,
magic noodle collages, and design their very
own old fashioned spinning top.

PUPPET TIME

Children will have fun creating different kinds
of simple puppets. Among them will be butterfly
puppets, flowing dragons, sock animals and big
mouth puppets. We will construct and decorate
them with a variety of art materials, then we

or an original skit.

sheet, or an ordinary plate, paper is nature's

If only we could fly, gliding on the wind, soaring
high above the clouds. If you are drawn to the
flutter of butterflies in flight, colorful puppets
that fly in the wind, the magic of hot air balloons,
and the gentle sound of chimes on your porch,
this is the class for you. Come fly with me
on a mixed media journey to create a butterfly
flyer, ladybug wind chime, wind puppets, and
a paper mache hot air balloon. Your creations
will bring color, music, and magic to the air.

MASK MAKING FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Travel to distant lands and cultures through
the ancient art of mask making. We will take
off to explore and create a variety of masks
from such far away places as Bali, West Africa,
and Egypt. On our return trip, we will visit
the tradition of Mardi Gras for some feathered
fun and then off to visit the happy and sad
fellows of theatre.

FELT FIESTA

Felt, with its softness and variety of colors,
is one of the most versatile textiles used by
artists. Children will learn how to use felt
coupled with mixed media such as decorative
paper, paint, clay pots, floral stems, beads,
fabric, beans and more to create felt bookmarks
that will add pizzazz to anyone's reading time,
colorful animal bean bags, potted felt flowers
for that special someone, and felt finger puppets
for endless fun with friends and family. So

SANDCASTLES/EXPLORING BEACH MATERIALS

What do you find at the beach? Children will
make permanent sandcastles with flags, towers
and anything else their imagination can dream
up. Another afternoon will be spent creating
a shell frame and experimenting with watercolors.
Using colored sands children will also explore
the art of mandalas or sandpaintings as a means
of expression and healing. There are no limits
to what can be made this week!

EXPERIENCING CLAY

will complete a woodworking project determined

CREATING DRAGONS

How many ways can we make a dragon? Well, there
are clay dragons, paper dragons, Chinese rolling

SCULPTURE

Students will be introduced to ways of experimenting,
working, and thinking as sculptors. The goal
of this class is to introduce the students to
different ways and styles of creating sculpture.
Students will build different animals like dinosaurs,
elephants, cows and giraffes from cardboard
and wood. Additional projects include stools,
birdhouses and masks. Laughter, fun, inspiration,
development of confidence and originality will
be part of each lesson.

GLASS FUSING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Here is an opportunity to learn to work with
kiln formed glass. We will explore the work
of a number of contemporary glass artists as
well as the colorful (pun intended!) history
of the contemporary art glass movement. Working
with sheet glass, recycled glass and accessory
art glass, frits and enamels, participants will
create jewelry, work with pate de verre, multiple
layered imagery and make functional objects.
Materials fee includes all materials, firings,
use of required equipment. You may choose to
bring an Exacto knife or your favorite glass
cutter or glass pliers (if you've been working
with glass), but that's not required. Fee payable

like bird feeders, fancy flower pots, wall pockets,

into some of our pieces and add engobes for
color to the once fired projects.

DRAWING HEROES AND VILLAINS

Superman, Batman, Spiderman: these are all great
heroes and in this class I will teach you how
to draw them and lots more. Do you want to turn
that stick figure into The Human Torch? How
about taking that square and turning it into
The Hulk? It's not as hard as you think. In
this class we will learn to take basic shapes
and form and turn them into our favorite heroes
and villains. We'll discuss form, shaping the
figure and discuss what makes a good hero. So,
if you ever wanted to learn how to draw Venom
or even Danny Phantom, then this is the class
for you. Students should come with a mechanical
pencil(s), colored pencils and a fine point
pen. When students sign up please let us know
a few characters your child would like to learn
to draw.

JEWELRY WITHOUT TORCHES

We will make our own precious stones with dazzling
dichroic glass and enamels. We will create glass
opals, multi-colored cabochons and kiln formed
beads and pendant drops. We will then design
bezels and settings using wire-wrapping and
precious metal clay (that fires to pure silver!)
Students will have the opportunity to learn
kiln firing glass, PMC, macramˇ, beading and
use of pre-made jewelry findings to complete
their sparkling wearable art. Materials fee
includes all materials, use of all required
tools and firings. You may choose to bring an
Exacto knife, needle nosed pliers or your favorite
glass cutter or glass pliers (if you've been
working with glass), but that's not required.

MYTHICAL CREATURES IN CLAY

POTTERY ON THE WHEEL

Have you ever wondered what it would be like
to make a pot on the potter's wheel? Here is
your chance to find out. Our first three classes
(July 30,31 and August 1) will be devoted to
demonstration, whole class and individual instruction
and student time on the wheel. The time off
in between our third and fourth class is needed
so that work may dry and be fired in preparation
for the glazing process. Our last two classes
(August 9,10) will be used to finish our work
utilizing several methods of low-fire glazing
as well as high-fire glazing techniques. Be
sure to bring a smock or wear old clothes.

FIBER FUN

with fiber. They will learn how to weave a critter
using fiber and beads, felt fleece into balls

THE ART OF PAPER

Ever wonder how people in ancient times made
paper? We will make our own paper, pulling sheets
from vats of pulp just the way they did! When
the sheets are dry, we will monoprint, block
print and hand draw the stories of our lives
into amazing artist's books. We will experiment
with using paper fiber as a three dimensional
material, making our own plaster molds and casting
light and beautiful paper objects that can be
functional or decorative. Materials fee includes

old clothes or bring an old men's shirt to wear

using landscape as a catalyst for creating from

depict forms, textures and color. When working

HAND BUILDING WITH CLAY

The handbuilding techniques of coil, pinch and
slab allow us to create anything from cups and
plates to animals, masks and tropical island
sculptures. And when you start combining these
techniques the possibilities are endless! This
class is designed to fit both students who are
new to pottery and those with experience. Using
proper handbuilding techniques a new project
(or two) will be taught each day. We will be
using engobes, the extruder, the slab roller,
paddles, stamps and other clay tools. Free time
periods scheduled throughout the course of the
week will allow students to pursue their own
ideas.
