Art From Down Under

Join me to explore one of the oldest art forms in the world: Aboriginal art of Australia. Learn how the Dreamtime creation stories of the Aborigines influenced their art throughout time. Students will create paintings on rocks and textured paper, construct a rain stick, and create a stuffed felt Aussie animal. Experience the ancient Aboriginal techniques of dot, bark and x-ray paintings while taking in a few dreamtime stories.
Mixed Media Collectibles

Working with mixed media, photos, and found objects, students will engage in projects with a collectible art theme such as a mini-accordion scrapbook, what's left collage, keepsake memory box, decorative paper quilt and paper bag lanterns. Students are encouraged to bring in photos, found objects, old buttons, pins, and earrings, as well as anything they collect to incorporate into their artwork.
All Aboard...Imagination "Un" Limited

Let the imagination muse summon a castle, an alien's home, a pirate ship, or a lion's den. Then, each child will be given a large appliance box, paint, brushes, glitter, markers, paper mache, fabric, buttons, shells, and stones to create an original imaginative space. Each day begins with a story about a character who creates something extraordinary out of something ordinary. During each session an accessory will be created for the space: a magic wand, a paper mache alien, a sail for a ship or a secret code-the sky is the limit. I will be there as a guide providing the necessary objects for them to create their imaginary world as they see it. Fee payable with tuition $10.00.
Colorful Lines & Shapes

Clay Water Creatures

After our story, children will delight in making their own fish, frogs, turtles, snails, alligators, and other creatures found around our ponds and oceans. We will make our creations with self-hardening clay, and have fun painting our critters in bright acrylic paints. Bring a smock or wear old clothes.
Puppet Mania

Puppets are wondrous creations that provide endless amounts of enjoyment for children. We will take a look at their history and create a variety of puppets from socks, felt, paper bags, and drinking straws. Each student will create a whimsical box theater to add to the enjoyment of playtime with their new friends. Let your imagination fly as we create unique, funny characters through the art of puppetry.

Experiencing Clay On & Off The Wheel

Ever wondered how a bowl or mug is formed on the potter's wheel? Or how about making a tile picture or a scary mask? We will have fun getting our hands dirty, working on the wheel, learning handbuilding techniques, and painting with engobes (colored clay). If you have an idea of what you want to make, we can try it. Bring an old t-shirt to wear.
Painting And Pastels

Do you enjoy painting? creating colors? experimenting with materials? We will use a variety of painting media (watercolors, acrylics, tempera) and oil and chalk pastels. Begin with a review of color mixing, the color wheel, and how to use the materials. Students are welcome to use their own ideas and favorite subjects. Demonstrations and discussions provide plenty of ideas. Open to novice and intermediate students.
Sandcastles / Exploring Beach Materials

What do you find at the beach? Students will make permanent sandcastles with flags, towers and anything else they imagine. One afternoon will be spent creating a shell frame and experimenting with watercolors. Using colored sands, children will also explore the art of mandalas or sandpaintings. There are no limits to what can be made this week!
Sculpting Like Michelangelo

Learn about basic human anatomy, body proportions, and sculpting techniques. Our goal is to sculpt a hand, foot, a simple portrait, and a small figure using water-based clay. Also learn to prepare sculptures to be fired in a kiln; all works will be fired at the Center after the course is completed.
Woodworking

Learn to use basic hand tools such as saws, hammers, and nails. Each student will complete a woodworking project determined by the instructor; e.g., paddle boat, toy car, stepstool, etc. Focus is on safety and fun while learning to work with wood. Class is limited to 8 students.
Drawing Anime Heroes and Villains

Take basic shapes and stick figures and turn them into your favorite anime and manga characters. Learn character design, form, and line drawing and how to draw anime characters. Whether it is a chibi or a traditional form of anime like Akira or Dragon Ball Z, this class has you covered. Bring a mechanical pencil, fine tip black pen (not a bic roller ball) and a set of colored pencils. When students sign up, let us know characters they want to draw.
Sewing Fun & Fashion

Create your own mini-purse. Students will paint fabric, then cut and sew panels to create a unique bag. Learn embellishment techniques, like adding beads and fused fabric, as well as quilting. We will make a quilted case for sunglasses or eyeglasses. If time allows, we will make beaded ankle bracelets and fabric pins.
The Animal Kingdom In Clay

Students will score, slip and use slabs and pinch pots to create sculptural animals such as cats, dogs, horses, frogs, birds, and more! Students will be encouraged and shown how to discover the unlimited textural possibilities that can be created with clay. Use of clay tools will be demonstrated.
Jewelry Without Torches

Make your own precious stones with dichroic glass and enamels. Create glass opals, colored cabochons and kiln formed beads and pendants. Design bezels and settings using wire-wrapping and precious metal clay. Learn kiln firing glass, PMC, macramé, beading and use of pre-made jewelry findings. Materials fee includes all materials, use of tools and firings. You may choose to bring an Exacto knife, needle-nosed pliers, or your favorite glass cutter or glass pliers; but that's not required. Fee payable with tuition $60.00
A Sewing Sampler

Sew a cuddly stuffed animal, patchwork pillow, and embroidered purse. After learning a few basic sewing and embroidery techniques, the class will be able to design and decorate wonderful fabric accessories. Fabric, felt, buttons, ribbons, and lace will be used to embellish our beautiful creations.
Global Art

The class will work from a variety of arts and crafts from places such as Alaska, Mexico, South America, Africa, China, Japan, Italy, and Poland. Materials used will be paints, pencil, charcoal and pastels. Techniques of the various media, composition and simple perspective will be covered.
Pottery On The Wheel

Ever wondered what it would be like to make a pot on the potter's wheel? Our first three classes will be devoted to demonstration, class and individual instruction and student time on the wheel. The time off in between our 3rd and 4th class is needed so that work may dry and be fired. Our last two classes will be used to finish our work utilizing several methods of glazing. Bring a smock or wear old clothes.
Let's Make Soft Sculptural Animals & Monsters

Create soft sculptures: stuffed animals and monsters. Learn to sew, draw and paint on paper and fabric. Find loose stuff around the house and use that too. Learn to add details with felt, buttons, foam, fringe, pom-poms, etc. All your sculptures will be ready to go home at the end of the week. Can't sew? Don't worry, no sewing experience is necessary.
Glass For Young People

For ages 7-10. Learn to work with hot glass! We will learn to cut, grind, drill and assemble glass for kiln forming. Working with sheet glass, frit, metal, and mica, we will make a lot of small objects, fired in the studio, and a large project. We will work with beautiful dichroic glass and millifiori. Students will learn some of the history of glass as an art form. Fee payable with tuition $60.00.

Imagine the possibilities of using a stencil as a pattern on any surface. Learn to design a wall sconce; a shirt; a wooden box; a tote bag; a wall collage. We will use fabric markers, permanent and dimensional paints, brushes, sponges, and embellishments, such as sewn buttons, beads, bells and sequins. Your imagination and your instructor will be your guide!
Hot Glass

For ages 10 -12. Glass is fun. It's beautiful! And, yes, you can do it! We will combine glass with copper, silver, and gold; work with millifiori from the famous "glass island" of Murano; use the "space age" dichroic glass; and make our own slumping molds for a plate, bowl or vase. Students will learn some of the history of glass as an art form. Fee payable with tuition $60.00
Nature's Bounty

Using earthenware clay, children will develop coil, slab, and pinch hand building techniques. Create sun faces, wall pockets, gargoyles or animal sculptures, bird feeders, and fancy flower pots. Students will use nature for inspiration to imprint texture into the claywork and add engobes for color to the once fired projects.

Travel To Four Corners Of The Earth

From Japan to Australia, from West Africa to Puerto Rico, we will celebrate different cultures and make a piece of art to commemorate each trip. In Japan, make a carp wind sock and gyotaku, a fish print. In Australia, make a rock painting, a piece of Aboriginal styled art and clapping sticks. In West Africa, tie dye a t-shirt and create a batik. In Puerto Rico, learn about the vegigantes and create a paper mache mask. Each day hear a story, listen to music, learn some words and be introduced to some customs of the countries we visit. Fee payable with tuition $10.00.

Handbuilding techniques of coil, pinch and slab allow us to create anything from cups and plates to animals, masks, and tropical island sculptures. When you start combining these techniques, the possibilities are endless! For students new to pottery and those with experience. A new project (or two) will be taught each day. Use engobes, extruder, slab roller, paddles, stamps, and other clay tools. Free time allows students to pursue their own ideas.

Work on bird houses, bird feeders and learn about the different kinds of food birds enjoy. Each day includes a story about bird. Create a birdhouse made from wood and one from a gourd. Collect twigs, pebbles, shells and more to decorate the bird's home. Create and decorate bird feeders. By week's end you'll have information and equipment to keep your backyard friends happy all year!

Journey into the world of Hogwarts, be sorted by the sorting hat and see which house you end up in. Make your own brooms for a game of Quidditch (which we'll learn to play). How about designing your own Marauders Map, so you know when Snape is around the corner. Make your dragons or potions. Students will create different projects based on the Harry Potter series. All work will be ready to take home at the end of the week. |
